"This could be my epitaph," sighs Pete Fijalowski on the first track of Swansongs, Polak's debut album. "This could be the last thing that you hear of me." As opening statements of intent go, it's hardly "Tonight, I'm a rock & roll star", but then Fijalowski has had his fair share of let-downs, burn-outs and false starts. As lead singer with indie-pop band Adorable,he knows that the music industry often gives short shrift to promising upstarts that wilfully underachieve. So, as Polak, Pete Fijalowski pre-empts his sticky end and, on Swansongs, shuffles out like a walking corpse, strumming his own sombre acoustic funeral march. Somewhere along the way, though, Polak discover a new lease of life, as the swelling ambition of "Gutter Song" nobly, yet forcefully stakes its claim over the essence of Swansongs.--Louis Pattison
