As part of the Urban Takeover collective, Aphrodite has produced some brilliant funky drum and bass remixes of the Jungle Brothers, Luniz, Moloko and Audioweb, and on his own he's been belting out top-notch jungle since the genre's inception in the early 1990s. His debut album is gloriously predictable--and that's a good thing. While other high-profile junglists turn to coffee-table jazz on their LPs, Aphrodite sticks to what he does best: dark and funky jungle. So instead of head-nodding jazz noodling, we get dark, bowel-shaking funky basslines, old school hardcore samples and rip-roaring breaks, all chopped together with a venomous urgency more suited to the dancefloor than your front room. While Aphrodite won't win any awards for innovation or woo a new generation of fans, it will delight his followers and any lovers of jump-up drum & bass. --Matt Anniss
