6twenty

Judging by the primal scream of 6Twenty, not only have New Zealand's D4 sold their souls to rock & roll, they've spent the proceeds on records by all the old favourites: Johnny Thunders, the Ramones and--but of course--the MC5. The message here seems to be simple: anything the Hives can do, we can do better--and such an attitude lays down the foundation for 12 tracks of garage-rock in excelsis. "I wanna give it to your sister and your brother like a motherfucker!" drawls frontman Jimmy Christmas, on the self-explanatory amphetamine splurge of the opening "Rock'n'Roll Motherfucker"--and from there on in, 6Twenty goes on to gleefully reinvigorate every sleazy cliché that the genre's ever kicked up. Their relative reverence for the form! even finds them dusting down a couple of covers--Johnny Thunders' "Pirate Love", and "Invader Love", a lost classic by obscure-but-excellent Japanese noiseniks Guitar Wolf. Throughout, though, D4 grip on tight to the frantic, fearless edge that elevates 6Twenty beyond mere rock parody. --Louis Pattison
